Shawnee's History
Opened by a land run in 1891, four individuals, Etta B. Ray, Henry G. Beard, James T. Farrall, and Elijah A. Alley, each staked a quarter section in the proposed city. After much discussion, the town was named Shawnee after the American Indian tribe. Etta Ray and Henry Beard soon married and built the first house in Shawnee. In 1895, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad arrived in Shawnee. The town began to experience major growth, spurting from 350 residents in 1894 to 2,500 in 1896. Today Shawnee has a population of over 31,000.
