Marketplace Sellers, Be on Alert
We’re seeing reports of scammers targeting people selling items through Facebook Marketplace and using payment apps like Cash App.
Here’s how the scam can work: A “buyer” claims they’ve sent payment, but the money never arrives. The seller is then contacted and told to call a number to resolve the payment issue. The scammer may ask the seller to turn on screen sharing or open their banking or payment apps while they’re on the phone.
That’s a Major Red Flag.
Never allow someone you don’t know to:
- Screen share your phone
- Access your banking or payment apps
- See your login information or PIN
- Direct you through a “payment verification” process
If you’re selling online, remember: You should never have to give someone access to your device or bank account to receive a payment.
When something doesn’t feel right, STOP. Hang up. Don’t click. Don’t share.
